The Talimena National Scenic Byway spans the countryside with over 50 miles of winding roads from East Oklahoma to West Arkansas. The Talimena National Scenic Byway begs travelers to stop and enjoy the view along the way as it climbs and falls along the crests of Winding Stair and Rich Mountains, through the Ouachita Forest. Spanning one of the highest mountain ranges between the Appalachians and the Rockies, this destination is ranked as the #1 Scenic Byway for Oklahoma and Arkansas and is a must for travelers, hikers, campers, bikers and sightseers alike.
As you stop along the way at the roadside vistas, be sure have your camera ready and capture some of the most breathtaking views you’ve ever seen. The plant life is in abundance here in the Ouachita Mountains and it makes for spectacular scenery year round. These mountains are the opposite of most typical mountain ranges that run north to south, the Ouachita Mountain range runs east to west—this allows for south and north slopes. The south slopes are made up of shortleaf pines, the oaks, black hickory, winged elm, wild plum and fringe trees. The north slopes are covered in the oaks, hickory, maples, beech, dogwood, pawpaw, magnolia, buckeye, hydrangea and wealth of spring wildflowers.
Surround yourself with nature and beauty as you explore the Talimena National Scenic Byway and be sure to make your way to the surrounding attractions, including Talimena State Park and the Oauchita National Forest.
