Venture into the small town of Hartshorne for the Hard Times Festival and be transported back into the Great Depression era of the late 1920s and ’30s. This festival celebrates the enduring spirit of those who survived the trying years of the Depression. Enjoy cheap eats like burgers and homemade pies as you share the streets with gangsters, hobos and various citizens in period dress. Street performers fill the downtown area depicting Depression-era preachers, newsboys, farmers and coal miners. Participate in old-fashioned relay races, contests and more. See a period-style fashion show, browse through handmade arts and crafts or marvel at the bygone engineering of antique cars and tractors. A quilt show will be on display, and mule-drawn wagon rides will be available to festival-goers. In addition to these festivities, enjoy music by local artists throughout the day. Tap your toes country, bluegrass, gospel and blues music. In the evening, attend the Poor Man’s Supper to feast on beans and cornbread, or join the fun at the annual Roadhouse Dance.
