Hidden Gems In Choctaw Country

Isn’t the point of “getting away” to, well, get away? Oftentimes, it doesn’t feel that way once we get to where we’re going. Between over-trafficked roads, crowded restaurants and loud camp neighbors who party till dawn, “getting away” can sometimes feel overwhelming.

If this resonates with you, we invite you to explore some of the hidden gems in Choctaw Country. These are places where you can spread out a little more without bumping any elbows. Places where breaths are deeper, the stars are multiplied and quiet moments expand into days.

Our top three hidden gems in Choctaw Country prove being a tourist doesn’t have to feel “touristy.”

COON CREEK LAKE
Located north of Wilburton, OK, Coon Creek Lake is a peaceful respite amid the heavily forested terrain of the Sans Bois Mountains. While there is no official boat ramp, the gently sloping north bank offers an easy place to put in small craft like canoes and kayaks. This small, secluded lake is also a great place to cast a line, as it’s regularly stocked with Florida bass and channel catfish.

To make the most of your stay, you’ll find ample accommodations at Robbers Cave State Park in the form of campsites, cabins and a luxurious lodge. And if you enjoy hiking, be sure to check out the Belle Starr Loop, which skirts the shores of the lake.

TWYMAN PARK
If you’re searching for a quiet escape the whole family can enjoy, , located on the outskirts of Poteau, is the perfect destination. Originally constructed in 1937, the park is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has a deep history of providing family entertainment. Take the kids for a swim at the public pool, featuring a slide at the deep end and a separate wading pool for tots, or let them loose on the playground. Fire up one of the grills near the pond and enjoy a family picnic, or bring your fishing poles and see what’s biting. The park also boasts an 18-hole disc golf course for frisbee-slinging fun.

Dive into more history with a visit to the nearby or discover stunning photo ops at Cavanal Hill. Visit Friday or Saturday, and you can treat the family to an old-fashioned drive-in movie at Tower Drive In, featuring popcorn and sodas, plus hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, chili cheese fries, funnel cakes and more!

HEAVENER RUNESTONE PARK
One of the lesser-known parks in Choctaw Country, lies a little off the beaten path just outside the small community of Heavener, OK. The park’s namesake comes from a large sandstone with runic carvings, the origins of which are shrouded in mystery. Spanning 55 stunning acres, Heavener Runestone Park offers over two miles of hiking trails, a seasonal waterfall, a playground, picnic areas, a gift shop and an amphitheater. You’ll also discover several equally beautiful options for camping sites: primitive, tents, groups, even a few spots for RVs with limited hookups.

Make your way to the park this Independence Day to catch the Kids on Wheels Fireworks Show, a family friendly parade where children of all ages are welcome to decorate their bikes, trikes, wagons, skates and strollers (be sure to check the website for registration dates if your kids want to participate). Plus, enjoy live music, food trucks, ice cream, a group bonfire with s’mores for everyone and – of course – the fireworks!
